NON-FINANCIAL ENTERPRISES FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
I. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Non-financial enterprises financial statements
regroup related tables on private non-financial corporations as
defined by the United Nations System of National Accounts (SNA):
balance-sheets, statement of income and change in net worth and
sources and uses of funds. The coverage may either consist of the
entire sector or of a sample depending on the country. Tables of
this type are not, in general, integrated in the system of
national accounts and are not compatible with the Financial
Accounts of OECD. International comparisons are particularly
difficult here due to the vast differences in both volume and
quality of the basic material available and methods employed for
calculation and valuation. It is, thus, necessary to refer to
the OECD Financial Statistics Methodological Supplement in order
to judge the precautions to be taken.
The present database is produced once a year under the
responsability of the Directorate for Financial, Fiscal and
Enterprises Affairs of the OECD. It could not, however, have been
done without the help of the national administrations which
participated in the preparatory work and supply the data
reproduced here.
II. CONTENTS AND DATA CHARACTERISTICS
The data relate to sector of non-financial corporations,
restricted to private corporations (as distinct from public
corporations); that is to say, the sector of private corporate and
quasi-corporate non-financial enterprises as defined in the SNA.
Three related tables are presented:
i) a table showing the balance-sheet structure
(Table 1E);
ii) a table showing the statement of income and
change in net worth (Table 2E);
iii) a table showing the capital operations and
financial transactions (sources and uses of
funds) (Table 3E).
The three tables are based on a selected group of published accounts of non-financial corporations; such studies are not, in general integrated with the main system of national accounts (excepted in the USA and Canada). Some of these countries also prepare income and flow of funds accounts for the whole of the sector from other sources altogether, while in others studies of business accounts provide the only source of information available on non-financial corporations.
The tables have, as far as possible, been compiled from unconsolidated figures. Where data are consolidated, they exclude foreign subsidiaries when possible.
Methods of valuing balace-sheets items and calculating depreciation differ from one country to another.
Table 1E: The table is designed to harmonize as well as possible with SNA concepts. For most countries, it has been compiled from business balance-sheets and compromises have had to be adopted to approximate these concepts from book-keeping totals.
Table 2E: This table is recognized to be a composite one. Items 1 to 4 are on lines of a condensed operating account for non-financial corporations, showing the genesis of the gross trading profit 5 (in SNA terms, the operating surplus plus depreciation 15 and superannuation provision 16; see SNA page 159, item 3.3.2). For some countries the material provided by published accounts starts only at item 5. From this point, items 5 to 17 reflect the rest of the income and outlay account displayed in SNA page 159. The lower half of the table (items 18 to 27) applies in reverse the adjustments which have been needed both here and in compiling Table 3E in order to pass from book-keeping concepts to concepts allied as closely as possible to national accounting ones.
This presentation in Table 2E then allows Table 3E to show sources and uses of funds of non-financial corporations clean of revaluations.
Table 3E: Countries are offered two alternative presentations (E.31 and E.32. Version E.32 being an extended one of version E.31).
To conform as closely as possible to the SNA definitions, all the data are calculated at current prices.
Monetary unit (million or billion of national currency) is specified in the database.
