The number of inhabitants in a given area as of 1 January of the reference year in question. Population data may be based on information available from the most recent census, adjusted by the components of population change (the number of births and deaths, and the net result of migration into and out of the territory concerned). Alternatively, population data may be compiled from administrative registers.
