Compared to the other modes, transport performances of rail experienced only a modest increase. Since the early 1990s, growth has been slow in most countries and a certain decrease in some countries can be observed. Still the EU average of km travelled per person and day is above 2. This increase is there in spite of a decreasing network and less rolling stock, which must indicate that the efficiency is higher.
